Hopi Aumutaka Heheya Kachina Doll - Ray Naha Jr.
Hopi Aumutaka Heheya Kachina Doll - Ray Naha Jr.
Item Details
Description
Raymond Naha Jr. (Hopi, late 20th to 21st century). "Heheya Aumutaka Kachina Doll" cotton wood with rabbit fur, fabric, and string, ca. 1995. Artist's initials carved and inscribed on underside of proper left foot. A dramatic portrayal of the Heheya Aumutaka Kachina or Heheya's uncle, hand-carved by Hopi artist Raymond Naha Jr. Adorned in pink-dyed rabbit's fur and brilliant painted pigments, the kachina holds string in his heands, yet otherwise presents traditionally with zigzagging lines down his face, knitted leggings, and red moccasins. He is a relative of the Ogres, although he himself is not an Ogre. The interesting thing about this Katsina is that he speaks the opposite of what he means. If he says something is "good," he means it is "bad." Size: 4.4" W x 11.5" H (11.2 cm x 29.2 cm)

Ray Naha Jr. is the son of the famous Hopi painter Raymond Naha; his mother is a well-known Hopi potter (Emma Naha), while his older brother Marty is known for his pottery and kachinas, and younger brother Shannon is following closely in Ray Jr.'s footsteps with some incredible old-style kachinas of his own. These two brothers are among the most popular old-style carvers at Hopi. Their work is very elaborate and authentic. They take a lot of pride in each piece - hand tying every feather and using only the best materials.

Provenance: private Don Phelps collection, owner Todos Santos Trading Post, Alamo, California; ex-Peggy Demouthe collection, 1979
