Description
Civil War Massachusetts Soldier's Canteen, Certificate, Ambrotype, and Book of Proverbs. This group was owned by Alonzo B. Fiske (his name is written in pencil on inside of the ambrotype case and inscribed on flask). Fiske was a carpenter in Boston, Massachusetts before enlisting with the Union. He was mustered on May 22, 1861 as Pvt. Co. K Mass. Vol. Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal on January 4, 1862 before being discharged with a disability February 26, 1864. He was then commissioned to First Lieutenant, July 19, 1864 and took command of the 16th Unattached Co. Mass. Vol. Militia on August 6, 1864. He finally mustered out November 14, 1864. (1) Canteen. The canteen has gold paint with black lettering. One side of canteen is inscribed with the battles Fisk had been in: South Mountain, Antietam, 2nd Bull Run, Charlestown, VA, Savage Station, Big Bethel, Malvern Hill, Suffolk, Peach Orchard, Smithfield Crossing," and several more illegible battles. The canteen is also inscribed, "Alonzo B. Fiske Co. K 29th Mass. Vol." The other side of the canteen is inscribed with the streams, rivers, and places the canteen had been filled from: "Fortress Monroe, Hampton Creek, Elisebeth River, Shingle Creek, Dismal Swamp, York River, Chesapeake Bay, James River, Pokamoke Sound, Chickahominy River, Aquia Creek, Potomac, Shenandoah," and two other locations that are illegible. Measures approx. 6" X 7". (1) 1870 Massachusetts certificate honoring soldiers who served in the Civil War. Marked, "Alonzo B. Fisk, 29th Infantry." Certificate measures 14 1/4" X 18 1/2". Frame measures 20" X 24". (1) Ambrotype of Fisk seated in uniform. His name is written in pencil inside of the case. Ambrotype measures 2" X 2 1/2". Case measures 2 3/8" X 3". (1) 1864 pocket size Book of Proverbs. The Larry Mangus Collection, Corinth, Mississippi.
Condition
Condition- Canteen has dents and paint loss. Ambrotype case is missing front cover and the frame has wear. Book of Proverbs has spine loss and toning. Certificate is partially loose in frame, has toning, tears, etc. See photos.
