Description
This is a solid wood, hand-carved mask with metal embossing that is believed to originate from the Akan people of Ghana. It has almond-shaped eyes, a triangular nose, and diamond-shaped lips. There are carvings on the forehead and brows in linear and wave-like patterns. The cheeks and forehead have embossed metal sheets, believed to be aluminum, with dots and crescent shapes. This may represent scarification rituals and practices that are common in many African cultures. The original writing on the metal sheets is unclear to read. This mask measures to be about 3 1/4 x 1.5 x 11 1/4 inches.
