Item Details

Description

Scarce map of Maine from an atlas that’s becoming exceedingly hard to find. A New Map of Maine published 1848 by S. A. Mitchell in his New General Atlas. Map shows several borders, including the Post-Revolutionary War border of 1783, which is slightly north of the final border of 1842. Also delineates the border suggested by the King of the Netherlands, who was chosen as an arbiter between the United States and Canada. This map was created at a time when railroads had yet to make much impact in this far northeastern territory. Shows forts, canals, railroads, topography, roads, towns, islands, coastal features, lakes and rivers. Tables in the upper right list Counties and County Towns of Maine and Population at Different Periods. Full original hand coloring by county. Mitchell’s signature hand-colored border sets this map apart from other map publishers at the time. Date had been scratched off but has been repaired. Toning to margins. One tiny edge tear has been repaired. 12 x 15.125
