Description
Vase, Sevres, 1901, Enghals bottle form, The body of matte stoneware is decorated with green and white pâte-sur-pâte and features classical portrait medallions suspended from ribbons, alternating with smaller round pendants decorated with either an owl, temple or pegasus. The whole stands on a separate openwork base in bronze optics, painted with the mark SEVRES DOAT 1901. minimal hairline crack, h. 34 cm, Taxile-Maximin Doat (1851-1938) joined the Sèvres manufactory in 1877, where he began experimenting with flambé and crystalline glazes, as well as pâte-sur-pâte. During the same period, he also produced wares in his own studios in Sèvres and Paris before moving to America in 1909. His work was exhibited frequently, and vases very similar to the present piece were featured in the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts exhibitions of 1901 and 1904, photographs of which are reproduced in Alastair Duncan, The Paris Salons 1894-1914, vol. IV, pp. 179 and 185.
