A black, formal, 19th century tailcoat worn by Paul Muni in The Story of Louis Pasteur (Warner Bros., 1936). He plays the great scientist.

The coat's original Western Costume Corp. label, on which "Paul Muni" is handwritten and crossed out, is present. Later alterations, including the added velour collar and the removal of two satin half covers on the lapels, can be seen.

The coat can be seen in an early scene where Pasteur visits the King, and in the film's final sequence, when, as an old man, his achievements are finally recognized by the science academy.

The picture won Academy Awards for Best Writing, Original Screenplay and Story, and Muni won Best Actor. Muni was nominated in that category for six of the mere 21 films in which he appeared. Surprisingly, he was passed over for two of his best known roles, in Scarface (United Artists, 1932) and The Good Earth (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1937).
