Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast United States, Makah culture, ca. late 20th century CE. A hand-carved wood mask and 2 dolls with articulating limbs and leather hands and waistcloth, representing mythical twin brothers. The story goes that they caught a large flatfish (sole, halibut, or flounder) and while arguing what to do with the fish, one brother tore out the other brother's hair - as depicted here; the bad brother is holding a tassel of black horse hairs. The mask is painted with the fish over an anthropomorphic visage, with a fur tuft. The mask verso is signed "Ed Raud." Size of mask: 8" L x 6" W (20.3 cm x 15.2 cm); dolls: 2" W x 9" H (5.1 cm x 22.9 cm)
Provenance: private Don Phelps collection, owner Todos Santos Trading Post, acquired in 1996
