Description
BAIRDI, Ottavio Antonio ( 1690-1765), et al.
Le Pitture Antiche D'Ercolano E Contorni Incise Con Qualche Spiegazione (Pictures of Ancient Herculaneum and its Environs).
Pag. 167.
Drawn and engraved by Vanni, Campana, Morghen, Pozzi et al..
Naples, 1760.
13 1/2" x 18 1/2" sheet.
These engravings depict frescoed walls, sculpture and architectural details from Herculaneum and buildings in its immediate vicinity. The eruption of Vesuvius, after 1200 years' dormancy, preserved a large number of buildings here, as well as in nearby Pompeii. Systematic excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii began in the early 18th century, stimulating what is known as the Neoclassical Revival, which lasted well into the 19th century. This collection of engravings was published as a source book for artists and craftsmen, as well as a decorative picture book for travelers. It also served to publicize the nascent science of archaeology.
