One of the most original and imaginative American fin-de-siècle magazines, instigated by a group of San Francisco artists and writers, led by Gelett Burgess and including Ernest Peixotto, Willis Polk, Porter Garnett, Yone Noguchi, Maynard Dixon and Frank Norris, who called themselves Les Jeunes. Burgess' famous verse "The Purple Cow!" is in the first issue.
