Description
A pair of antique Japanese Satsuma pottery vases. Late Meiji era, before 1912. Tall faceted vases with gilt figurative handles. The pieces are richly decorated with hand-painted traditional Japanese ornaments, gilding, and depictions of Buddhist monks, or Arhat, with a white dragon. Each piece is hieroglyohically marked on the bottom. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province, since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated.
