A wonderful etching of Adam and Eve beneath the Tree of Life by Ernst Fuchs, one of the founders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Fuchs was a multi-talented artist who worked in various media, including painting, sculpture, architecture, drawings, set designs, as well as prints. He specialized in imaginative interpretations of religious and allegorical themes like this example. A beautiful etching by Ernst Fuchs mounted in a custom matte and gold tone frame. Size (plate mark): 11.875" L x 14.625" W (30.2 cm x 37.1 cm) Size (frame): 24.5" L x 26" W (62.2 cm x 66 cm)

About the artist: Born in Vienna, Fuchs was the only child of a Catholic seamstress and a Jewish antique dealer. In order to escape the Holocaust, he was baptized Catholic. At age fifteen, he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna where he met artists Arik Brauer, Anton Lehmden, Rudolf Hausner, and Wolfgang Hutter with whom he co-founded the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Their mentor was Professor Albert Paris Gutersloh who taught his students Old Master techniques and encouraged them to incorporate religious symbolism and allegory in their compositions. Austrian symbolist Gustav Klimt was also a significant influence on Fuchs. In 1950, Fuchs moved to Paris where he lived for twelve years. He also traveled to Spain, Italy, the United States, and England during these years. Some of the artists Fuchs met, such as Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dali, and Jean Cocteau, became friends as well as significant influences. For more about Fuchs, visit the Ernst Fuchs Museum website or the museum itself. Housed in the former home of Jugenstil architect Otto Wagner, when Fuchs purchased it, he initially used the house as his studio, but it was later transformed into a museum.
