Description
1859 George Stephenson Railway Engineer Railroads Trains Steam Engines

“George Stephenson, with a sagacity of mind in advance of the science of his day, answered, when asked what was the ultimate cause of motion of his locomotive engine, that it went by the bottled-up rays of the sun.”

--Carl Wilhelm Siemens

George Stephenson was a famous railway engineer, whose reputation stemmed from his success in improving both locomotives and rails.

Samuel Smiles was a famous Scottish writer and social reformer, who studied medicine at Edinburgh. He settled as a surgeon in Leeds where he became editor of the Leeds Times and later secretary of the Leeds and Thirsk Railway. While at Leeds, he met George Stephenson and undertook a biography of him which was first published in 1857.

This 1859 abridged edition of Samuel Smiles larger work, features 40 illustrations throughout and includes topics such as the history of the invention of the locomotive engine, and of the railway system in general.
