Description
1903 BEATRIX POTTER 1st ed The Tailor of Gloucester Childrens CHRISTMAS Story
Beatrix Potters “The Tailor of Gloucester” is a cherished Christmas tale, the third in her series of 23 “Tales” childrens books. The story revolves around a humble tailor who is assisted by mice he had saved from his cat in completing a waistcoat, echoing an incident involving a real Gloucester tailor named John Prichard. This tailor, who supposedly had fairies help him finish a suit for the mayor, is depicted as a quaint old man in Potters tale, set in the 18th century. Potter meticulously crafted her illustrations, studying 18th-century dress in a museum and sketching the Gloucester street where the real tailors shop was located. The tale was initially presented as a Christmas gift to a young girl in 1901 and later revised and privately printed in 1902. It eventually reached a wider audience after being edited by her publisher. This book held a special place in Potters heart and was often referred to as her personal favorite of her works.
