Description

Pair of Impressive Neoclassical Gilt-Bronze Torcheres

second quarter 19th century, the eighteen-light torcheres with winged lion finials presiding over grape-molded and scrolled candle branches, raised on standards lushly decorated with putti, griffins and blackamoors, the bases with hippocampi frames.
h. 73", w. 18-1/2", d. 18-1/2"

Condition

In "as found" condition. Both have numerous old repairs and missing elements. One has two arms broken off and one missing. Some of the arms are bent as well. One candle cup is off but present and the threaded rod is stripped. Another one has an old break with an internal rod added. The lower section of the base may have had bronze chains running from one figure to the next as there are ring holes on each figure. The other torchere has three broken arms and three missing. Some of the arms are slightly bent. One figure is missing at the base as well as any chains that may have connected them together.
