Item Details

Description

Wonderful example with an intricately "S" scrolled molded back carved with a spray of flowers above a shaped solid seat. The arms are fashioned in the form of swanâ€™s wings. The chair is raised on a fanciful intertwined base of tree branches or vines terminating in stylized pointed web feet. Fantasy or Grotto furniture gained popularity in the later part of the 19th century with the advent of the Art Nouveau period and style. For a good overview of this genre, refer to "Fantasy Furniture" by Bruce M. Newman. Published by Rizzoli, 1989. SIZE: 39" h x 20" d. Seat is 20" h. CONDITION: very good. Structurally good, there are some minor repairs. (05-176/JJ). $750-1,250.
