Description
STAFFORDSHIRE TRANSFER-PRINTED ELEPHANT MOTIF CERAMIC PLATTERS, LOT OF TWO, each having blue transfer scenes, comprising one with "BURMESE", as printed to underside, depicting figures riding an elephant with mountains and castle-style building in background, and one Chinoiserie example featuring pagodas with an elephant and trainer. Marks to underside include printed eagle on shield with "M.V. & Co." and impressed "ROGERS" and "20". Mellor, Venables & Co., Burslem; John Rogers & Son, Longport, England. First half 19th century. 17 3/4" x 14 3/8" and 21" x 15 5/8".

Condition
"Burmese" example having rim with two flakes, a bruise, and usage wear including scattered glaze loss to well rim and moderate crazing with some discoloration to underside; Rogers Chinoiserie example with moderate bruise to well with associated hairline.
