Description
BRITISH NEEDLEWORK SAMPLERS, LOT OF TWO, comprising one wool and possibly cotton on linen, upper fourth featuring four alphabet and numeral rows segmented by bands of decorative stitching, below with a two-line verse above signature of "Elizabeth Jane Endacott / Aged 11 Years 1864", lower half with various pictorial motifs including a tree with a bird perched at the top, a crown, flowers featuring a central tulip arrangement in a handled vessel with a heart, and a deer, all encompassed by a scrolling vine border; and the other wool on linen, seven alphabet and numeral rows segmented by bands of decorative stitching, lower third signed "Mary Ann Ridsdill 1846", surrounded by various motifs including crowns, butterflies, birds, and flowers. Each housed under glass in an old frame. Mid 19th century. Endacott example 13 1/2" x 16 1/2" sight, 15 1/8" x 18 1/8" OA; Ridsdill example 12" x 15 1/2" sight, 15 1/8" x 18 1/2" OA.Â

Endacott example in good to very good visual condition with linen having some toning notably along edges, as-made nail holes along edges with discoloration, some thread with fading/fugitive color; Ridsdill example in good visual condition with linen having some toning and staining, some thread with fading/fugitive color, some scattered losses to thread mostly small in size; frames with wear and other imperfections.Â
