Description
This is a wonderful engraving from United Kingdom born artist Frederick Walker (1840-1875). This piece is called The Lost Path of a woman cradling her child, protecting it from the elements. His initials are stamped in the right as well as a date of 1863. It is framed, under the glass, the signature appears pencil signed. Framed in a stunning antique frame with gold paint, shell and floral motif in the corners. Measures 23.5" x 29.5" overall. Frederick Walker was born in the UK in 1845. He showed real talent for art at a young age. When he was 15, he began to work in an architect's office but two years later, he gave up to return to school at the British Museum and James Matthews Leigh's art school. By the next year, he became an apprentice wood engraver and painted in his spare time. He earned a lot of success as an illustrator from 1860-1865 for popular journals of the era. Joseph Swain engraved many of his pieces during this time. Sir John Everett Millais called Walker "the greatest artist of our century". In 1873, he moved to Algiers to try and recover from a bout of tuberculosis, however his condition worsened and he passed in 1875.
