East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A silk painting of a Daruma monk (Bodhidharma) wrapped in red robes marked with calligraphy, artist signature, and red seal marks, and the silk is mounted on a vintage cardboard. The larger calligraphy is a Buddhist phrase that translates approximately to "All things come from nothingness" or "originally nothingness," a Zen reminder to free oneself from attachments. The smaller calligraphy is the artist's name, possibly "Yuei Gyofu," and the seals may be secondary artist marks. The largest seal is illegible and somewhat smudged.
