Description
Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-carved funerary mask meant to attach to a larger mummy bundle. The plank-form mask is painted with a broad red face accented with white, diamond-shaped eyes, a rectangular mouth, and a prominent nose. The top of the head is perforated for strings to tighten the textile headpiece to the wooden composition. Size: 2" L x 9.5" W x 16" H (5.1 cm x 24.1 cm x 40.6 cm); 23.25" H (59.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Expected nicks and chips to peripheries, with loss to neck handle, abrasions and light fading to pigment, and some minor fissures, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to textile headpiece.
