Item Details

Description

Antique Pair of bronze four-light candelabras was produced in France in the early 1800's, during the Empire period that coincided with the rule of Napoleon. They each measure 21" H x 8.50" W (inches). Under Napoleon's decree that a king is only a king "when dressed", artwork and furniture from this time was highly ornate and neoclassical in nature. Napoleon believed that pieces produced during this time should rival the ancient works of Rome, Greece, Egypt and Macedonia. The candle cups of the candelabra are two-tiered. The topmost tier has a single cup adorned with gilded scoop moulding. The cup sits on top of an urn-shaped node with curled palmette decoration. Palmettes, called anthemion by ancient Greeks and Romans, are often found in Empire pieces. The three foliate-leaved bobeches on the lower level have rinceaux coiled arms, which is another trait of Empire craft. All four arms rest on a beaded shoulder. Below are multiple layers of gilded dÃ©cor that include more beading and scoop with a foliate motif that are supported by a fluted Corinthian column, one of which needs a small restoration, which is barely noticeable. The base of the tripod curves up, and they sit on monopodia legs. Goats, Lions, tripods and monopod elements are all aspects of Empire's creations. These regal and classically inspired French Empire candelabras will add a touch of refinement to any surface on which they are placed. They each measure 21" H x 8.50" W. Produced in France in the early 1800â€™s, during the Empire period.
