He took drawing lessons with Godfrey Kneller and attended the anatomy lectures of the leading English surgeon of the day, William Cheselden. In 1715 he abandoned his law studies to dedicate himself to teaching as a portrait painter. His final breakthrough as a portrait artist was successful in 1725, when King George commissioned him to portray the Knights of the newly founded Bath in full armour. The years from 1732 to 1734 were marked by rapid travel, led by Highmore in the Low Countries and France. After his return to London to continue under the influence of the French Rococo.
