Attributed to Joseph Highmore (1692 - 1780) Title: Untitled, Medium: Oil on canvas, Size: 51.25" H x 46.50" W, with frame 59.50" H x 54.25" W (inches), Date: Mid 18th century. This lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Attribution and is not a reproduction, it is a unique piece. We recommend that the buyer do their research before bidding on the lot. The sale of this lot is final. Was a British painter who was born in 1692. Portrait painter and historian Joseph Highmore was born into a late 17th century English family. He studied Law. He took drawing lessons with Godfrey Kneller and attended the anatomy lectures of the leading English surgeon of the day, William Cheselden. In 1715 he abandoned his law studies to dedicate himself to teaching as a portrait painter. His final breakthrough as a portrait artist was successful in 1725, when King George commissioned him to portray the Knights of the newly founded Bath in full armour. The years from 1732 to 1734 were marked by rapid travel, led by Highmore in the Low Countries and France. After his return to London to continue under the influence of the French Rococo. The Foundling Museum represented the work of Joseph Highmore in the past. Joseph Highmore's work has been offered for auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from $550 to $118,548, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. The artist's record price at auction since 2000 is $118,548 for Portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Pryce, sold at Woolley & Wallis in 2007. Joseph Highmore has appeared in articles for Apollo, ArtDaily, and The Guardian. The most recent article is Who were the Bluestockings? written for BBC News in April 2019. The artist died in 1780.
