Gerald Ford Personally Owned Dress Shirt & Pipe w/ Staff Provenance

A pair of two items personally owned by 38th president Gerald Ford, including a long-sleeved monogramed dress shirt and tobacco pipe. The shirt, displaying a closely dotted blue and white pattern, is monogramed with the initials "G.R.F." in two places: the first on the front breast pocket and again inside the collar embroidered on the tag below. Exhibits isolated area of minor staining near bottom left of verso, with some creasing that could be easily ironed. The pipe, manufactured by Kriswill, features a speckled wooden bowl and shank, with dark brown stem; the chamber shows expected residue within, as well as indentations at mouthpiece from evident use. Accompanied by two photocopied letters sent from the Office of Gerald Ford from Lee Simmons (1931-2018), a longtime member of Ford's staff, which details how the items were acquired in 1993. A fine pairing overall.

Gerald Rudolph Ford (1913-2006) was an American politician who served as the 38th president of the United States from 1974 to 1977. He previously served as the leader of the Republican Party in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1965 to 1973, when he was appointed the 40th vice president by President Richard Nixon, after Spiro Agnew's resignation. Ford succeeded to the presidency when Nixon resigned in 1974, but was defeated for election to a full term in 1976. Ford is the only person to become U.S. president without winning an election for president or vice president.
