"The Union Forever!", Lincoln/Johnson 1864 Electoral Ticket

A 2.75" x 8.5" ticket from the election of 1864 for the 4th District of Allegany County, MD headlining, "The Union Forever!/ For President, Abraham Lincoln./ For Vice President, Andrew Johnson." Also listed are the state's presidential electors, as well as other candidates for Maryland's state and district offices and features a beautifully colored illustration of a flying American flag. Shows moderate wear, including uneven toning, soiling, edge tearing, and evidence of prior mounting at corners. Else, good condition with nice connections to Maryland's electoral history.

With the Civil War still in progress by November 8, 1864, incumbent President Lincoln felt that he had little chance of winning reelection. Despite these early fears of defeat, Lincoln would win with overwhelming majorities in both the popular and electoral vote, partly as a result of the recent Union victory at the Battle of Atlanta. Indeed, the results would yield a decisive victory in favor of Lincoln under the National Union Party, with his Democratic opponent McClellan winning in just three states. Specifically in the state of Maryland, Lincoln and Johnson would win all out of the seven possible electoral votes, as well as an approximate 55% of the popular vote, making it the last Republican win for the state until 1896. This victory was sadly cut short following Lincoln's assassination less than two months into his second term.
