Outlaw Frank James Original Type IV Photo

A rare and attractive glossy black and white photograph of Frank James seated with a dog in the back of a horse-drawn carriage circa 1900-1910. Verso is blank save for "7" faintly stamped at lower right. 5.625" x 3.813". Encapsulated by PSA/DNA as an authentic Type IV photograph to an overall size of 10" x 6.5". Light creasing to the lower left corner. In fine condition.

Frank James (1843-1915) was an American Confederate soldier and guerrilla. In the post-Civil War period, he was an outlaw. The older brother of outlaw Jesse James, Frank was also part of the James-Younger Gang. During his years as a bandit, James was involved in at least four robberies between 1868 and 1876 that resulted in the deaths of bank employees or citizens. The most famous incident was the disastrous Northfield, Minnesota raid on September 7, 1876, that ended with the death or capture of most of the gang. A few months after his brother’s death, Frank gave himself up. He was tried for murder in Missouri and found not guilty, tried for robbery in Alabama and found not guilty, and finally tried for armed robbery in Missouri and again released. A free man, James returned to the James Farm to retire, giving tours for the sum of 25 cents.
