Description
Vintage 1930s-1940s [pre-embargo] Art Deco Menta Verde liquor bottle, decanter in shape of Cuban male dancer wearing flamboyant rumba costume and a small drum. There is a small original "Menta Verde" label on the base, the residue of the vintage liquor stamp on top, and manufacture's label on the backside of the bottle.
The glass bottle is 11.3/4" [29.8cm] tall, 5" x 3.1/4" [12.7cm x 8.2cm] at the base, a few small residues of the original cork are still stuck inside on the bottom of the bottle [see photos]; very good / fine condition.
The manufacturer's label states "Manufactured & Bottled exclusively for HERMAN'S STORE. Cigars, Perfumes and Novelties. Prado St. 256, Havana, Cuba. Fabricado por Compania Licorera de Cuba, SA, Basarrate 102, Habana..." On the bottom of the bottle is in glass molded mark "PROPIEDAD DE LA COMPANIA LICORERE DE CUBA S.A. HABANA" and number 7791.
Herman's Store was founded by Herman Weinberg in 1925. The store was specialized on Cuban cigars, liquors, perfumes, Cuban novelties, alligator goods and souvenirs. Due to the location, opposite of the Seville Biltmore Hotel in the center of Havana, Herman's Store became a popular shopping center with the American tourists. The residue of the vintage liquor stamp indicates that such liquor bottles were indented as exotic Cuban souvenirs for American tourists [until Castro's revolution and the end of America tourism to Cuba in the late 1950s].
Compania Licorera de Cuba , S.A. Basarrate No. 102, Habana was established after the WWI, 1918-1919. Later, Compania Licorera de Cuba acquired Enrique Aldabo's liquor company and his outstanding patented rum and liquor recipes. It transformed Compania Licorera into one of Cuba's leading liquor producers. The Company was nationalized by the Cuban government in the late 1950s- early 1960s.
