Description
Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird and Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1800, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled neck and ribbed handle, the front featuring an incised bird with turned head, perched on a flower extending from a stylized grassy lawn. Incised decoration filled with cobalt slip. Handle terminals decorated with brown slip. The incised bird, featuring distinctive wing detail and turned head, is similar to Remmey examples from Baltimore, and suggests this jug is possibly the work of the Remmey family's Manhattan years. A rare example of early New York City stoneware. Faint 3 1/2" surface line extending from neck to shoulder, probably in-the-firing. 7/8" in-the-firing contact mark / chip to side of jug. In-the-firing, glazed-over separations at base. A few small base chips. Horizontal hairline in handle. Staining to surface.
