Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed and Incised Floral Decoration, attributed to Clarkson Crolius, Sr., Manhattan, NY, circa 1800, ovoid stoneware jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an unusual floral design with incised stem and leaves, coggled petals, and impressed center. Heavy cobalt highlights blossom and stem, including spotted accents to petals. Similar floral designs using impressed decoration were employed by Clarkson Crolius, Sr., suggesting he was the likely maker of this jug. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a forty year Pennsylvania collection. 2" x 1 1/2" flaked section to side of jug, surrounded by some other small flaked spots, all of which have been colored. Another flake off of opposite side of jug, measuring approximately 2 1/4" x 2", which has also been colored. 4 1/2" vertical hairline at base on reverse, extending onto underside and 1 1/2" up opposite side of jug. Glazed-over 1" stone ping on reverse.
