Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778), "Veduta dell'antica Via Appia," from the series "Le Antichita Romane," 1756, posthumous restrike, etching on paper, detail of the paving stones of the Via Appia (the Appia Way, the oldest road in Rome dating from 312 BCE), signed "Piranesi Archit.dis.inc.," in the plate lower right, numbered with volume and plate information at upper right: "T.III/VII," stones within the image are marked: "A/B/C/D" and described in lower margin, blind stamp lower left possibly from the "Regia Calcografia Edition," unframed, provenance: Phyllis Lucas Gallery, NYC, image: 14" H x 9.5" W, sheet: 33" x 23.5".
