North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a lovely and large serving vessel, wheel thrown, and hand painted using traditional methods developed in the Fez region, which draws upon Islamic, Spanish, and Berber culture. The bowl rests on a ring foot that is pierced for suspension as these bowls are traditionally displayed on the wall when not in use. The thick and flared rim is painted with a teal blue band and a deep brown abstract flourish pattern. The interior is covered with a white glaze then over painted with a 6-pointed star shaped polygon in the center, surrounded by a stylized petals and circular shapes that contain foliate patterns. Size: 15.75" Diameter x 4" H (40 cm x 10.2 cm)
Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Condition
Repaired from approximately 5 large pieces with visible break lines on interior basin and verso. Losses and chips along break lines. Chips and abrasions to rim and ring foot. Abrasions, firing and glazing imperfections, surface pitting, and discoloration. Nice craquelure and patterns are bold.
