In the 1930s, Lew Davis responded to the crises of the Great Depression and the global spread of fascism by focusing on the plight of the worker. In addition to his paintings of workers made in New York and Arizona, Davis created many murals, most notable of which is The Negro in America’s Wars (Howard University Art Gallery, Washington).
