Description
An important pre-Revolutionary War English officers sword worn at the Battle of the Monongahela during Braddocks Expedition on July 9th, 1755 by Captain Robert Orme. Hilt with elongated pillow pommel, solid knuckle guard, openwork cross guard, chiseled wire design metal grip. 25.5" blade with slight curve, double unstopped fuller, overall 31.5" long. Leather scabbard with iron mounts and drag tip. Mounted to wood plaque with brass plaque identifying the sword and the battle. Captain Orme fought along side General Edward Baddock, who was mortally wounded in this battle, and a young Lt. Col. George Washington and was essentially second in command as Washington was enlisted as a volunteer aide. The English defeat at this battle was a turning point in the French and Indian War. After the defeat at this battle, Capt. Orme returned to England and retired from military life. Please note while this sword is correct and of the period, we cannot guarantee these as belonging to Orme and are relying on family tradition and the associated plaques. Condition: Nice chocolate brown to patina to blade and hilt, very minor spots of peppering. Scabbard with cracking and warping, hole in center from mounting to board.
