Description
Christiaan Karel Appel (Dutch, 1921-2006). Lithograph on paper depicting a simplistic design with bold colors, 1969. Pencil signed and dated along the lower right; numbered 176/190 along the lower left.
The composition is iconic of the avant-garde group CoBrA, later changed to Internationale des Artistes Experimentaux. Appel co-founded the group along with Constant, Corneille, Joseph Noiret, Asger Jorn, and Christian Dortremont. While the group only lasted from 1948-1951, it remained a lasting influence on Appel's art throughout his life.
