Description
Pencil signed. Sight: 8" high x 5" wide. Overall with frame 15" high x 10-3/4" wide. Haskell was a well-known figure in New York and Paris during the early part of the 20th century. In 1976, a memorial centennial exhibition of his birth was held at the New York Public Library. Haskell was especially noted for his etchings, a skill he learned as a student of James McNeill Whistler. He also designed promotional posters in watercolor.In 1917 during World War I, he was commissioned to help develop the new science of camouflage. Later describing his work to friends, he said: "We can paint battleships in such a way that at sea they seem invisible a mile away, or even less.
