Description
ENG
Limited edition of 250 numbered copies on papier Hollande (our n.132); 10 engraved illustrations coloured au pochoir. Sheets of different sizes. Untrimmed edges. Publisher’s hardback. In 1908, the ever-innovative couturier Paul Poiret commissioned Paul Iribe to illustrate an advertising album of his new collection. Although pochoir was already the dominant medium for fashion illustration, Iribe made a significant innovation to the genre: he only applied the pochoir to the women in flat, bold colour fields, leaving the backgrounds b/w, really showing off the clothing’s details. The catalogue features 17 day and evening dresses, 3 coats and 7 hairstyles. Poiret’s styles indicate the new freedom in women’s fashions and are precursors to the decorative styles of the 1920s. At the same time Iribe’s album recalls the Napoleonic era, featuring both empire-waist dresses and elegant early-19th century furniture. Both forward-looking and historicizing, Les Robes de Paul Poiret is a landmark in the history of 20th century illustration, fashion and art deco design and an inspiration to other fashion illustrators such as Barbier, Martin, Lepape, and Marty.
