A Betts's Patent Portable Terrestrial Globe, English, first quarter of the 20th century, printed cartouche reading BY ROYAL LETTERS PATENT, BETTS'S PORTABLE TERRESTRIAL GLOBE, COMPILED FROM THE LATEST AND BEST AUTHORITES, British Empire coloured red., LONDON: GEORGE PHILIP & SON. 32 FLEET STREET, LIVERPOOL: PHILIP SON & NEPHEW LTD 20 CHURCH STREET, PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN, by George Philip & Son after the original patent by John Betts, the collapsible umbrella globe with eight printed colour lithograph gores printed on linen, sewn and stretched over eight flexible umbrella ribs, mounted on central metal pole, with original carrying tube (distressed) with paper cover reading Betts's Patent Portable Globe, expanded globe approx. 15in (38cm) diameter tube 28in x 2 1/2in x 2 1/2in (71cm x 6.5cm x 6.5cm) Footnotes: George Philip took over the manufacture of these unusual globes following patent holder Betts's death in 1863.
