A MBLE MCR-1 Bg Miniature Communications 'Biscuit Tin' Receiver, Belgian, 1950s, serial no. 74, with four plug-in coil packs, aerial, wire on a reel, earth stake and headphones, lacking power unit, each unit in green crackle-finish case, the whole, in canvas sack stencilled 75 and with carrying strap, 9in x 2 1/4in x 3 1/2in (23cm x 5.5cm x 9cm) sack 12in x 4in x 10in (30.5cm x 10cm x 25.5cm) Footnotes: Provenance: The John Elgar-Whinney collection of clandestine radios and cipher machines. The MCR-1 became a popular receiver during WW2 with resistance groups in several European countries. It was built under licence by Philco in the UK, and many were dropped over occupied Europe for the reception of the BBC that carried the latest news and often coded messages for the resistance. The sets were distributed in water-tight sealed tins, which is why they got the nicknamed 'Biscuit Tin Receiver'. The present example is a Cold War model produced in Belgium, which replicating the design and features of the British original.
