Susan Huff Schlather and Martha Huff Farris in Memory of Cyrus Beede (1828-1908)
Cyrus Beede (1828-1908) was born in Carroll County, New Hampshire in 1828. In 1870, Beede was hired as the Chief Clerk of the Central Indian Superintendency, Lawrence, Kansas with jurisdiction over the Osage from 1876-1878. His work with the Superintendency and proximity to Fort Leavenworth during this period granted him influence over a pivotal period of Western Expansion. Beede's attention to detail and service brought him distinction and recognition among his fellow agents and in 1883, Beede was appointed Special Indian Agent of the Western territories. He retired from his post in 1886 and moved to Iowa where he was appointed Secretary of the Iowa Life and Endowment Association.
