Description
Japanese Silver Inlaid Bronze Vase by Ogawa Eiho (Japanese 1896-1990) produced for retailer Onishi Kinryodo, is an exemplary example of the metal artistry developed in Japan. It probably dates to around 1930s-1940's. The upper part is copper and shibuichi, an alloy of copper and silver, that forms the base of vase. The vase shape is inspired by ceramic models. The decorative scheme includes a pair of cranes in high relief flying over gently rolling waves, the cranes masterfully carved and inlaid with silver. Eiho's signature (Ei) is carved on the back of the vase The bottom of the vase has the Onishi Kinryo-do mark, for the Tokyo based shop specializing in jewelry, gold, silver and watches. It comes with its own tomobako; On the cover is the inscription "Do Shibuichi Tsuru Chokoku Tsuki" (copper, shibuichi with crane carved). It also has its own carved wooden stand.
