SHELTON SISTERS (FORSYTH CO., NORTH CAROLINA) RIB-TYPE WOVEN-SPLINT EGG BASKET, white oak, delicately woven converging-rib kidney form with double, wrapped rim and arched handle bearing X-form lashings. Retaining original dry, natural surface. Circa 1910. 5 3/4" HOA, 3 1/2" H rim, 6" D.Â
Catalogue Note: Miss Mary Shelton (1837-1921) and her sister Miss Eliza Shelton (1845-1933) were highly esteemed Forsyth Co., NC basketmakers. Both were recorded in the 1910 U.S. Census as "basket maker at home". They were widely known not only for their extremely fine weaving, but also for cutting and splitting their own splint.
