Description
East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. 1888 CE. A large bronze vessel cast with a pair of koi or carp fish in low relief, the side near the fishes' tails is signed by the artist. The bottom of the vase is etched with a commemorative inscription with Japanese characters that approximately translates to the "10th Anniversary of Founding the Tokyo Stock Exchange." The Tokyo Stock Exchange was established in 1878 as the "Tokyo Kabushiki Torihikijo." Size: 10" Diameter x 14.25" H (25.4 cm x 36.2 cm)
