Description
by Robert Edgar Stone, London 1949, of tapering cylindrical form with detachable bases, facsimile signatures. (2) 7cm high, 5 troy ounces gross
Robert Edgar Stone, known professionally as R.E. Stone, was an English silversmith. Born in 1903, his work is famous for its handcrafted style. When he was 14, Stone enrolled at the Central School of Arts in London; during his time with the school, he won a scholarship from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. He founded his workshop in 1929, and some of his most famous work includes the various products he manufactured to commemorate George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935. Stone’s work is distinctive for being largely handmade, and he was noted for stamping his work with a facsimile signature, as in this example. He died in 1990, and his items are now in very great demand among collectors
