Hard boards, original blue cloth with black and gold stamping on front board and spine [a little shelf wear], 6" x 9"; review copy label inside front cover, xvii + 734 pages including Index, c.50 monochrome illustrations, 40+ maps, very good condition.
"John Donald Hicks 1890-1972 was a member of the history department at Berkeley for thirty years. He was the Morrison Professor of American History from 1942 until 1957, when he became Morrison Professor Emeritus.
He reached a larger audience through the "Hicks histories"--The Federal Union (1937), The American Nation (1941), and A Short History of American Democracy (1943). All three were repeatedly revised; all three drew wide praise. It is impossible to estimate the number of students whose knowledge of American history has been built on the "Hicks histories," but it is certainly an immense number..."
