Description
Half plate of the painting by George Cattermole (1800-1868) depicting a scene at the Imperial Diet of the Holy Roman Empire held in 1529 in Speyer, Germany. Held in the wake of 1526 Diet in the same city, the later Diet prohibited any further expansion of protestant reformation, and ordered that Catholicism be followed in all states of the Holy Roman Empire.
This lot includes an original etching titled, "Martin Luther and Melancthon at the Diet of Augsburg," published in 1869 by Johnson Fry & Co. The etching page measures 7" x 10".
Cattermole's painting is curated at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
