The panel is made up of 3 vertical planks which are held together on the reverse by numerous small wooden battens and the vertical panel joins are visible from the front. There is some minor abrasion around the edge of the panel presumably where the frame has rubbed. The paint surface is dirty and scuffed. In strong light it is possible to see old restoration to the panel join, lower left, scattered throughout the background, and to the sitter's bodice and skirt.
Inspection under ultra-violet light is hindered by the thick reflective varnish but it is possible to see: restoration to both panel joins; numerous areas of restoration (along the grain) throughout the background; retouching to the coat-of-arms; infillings to the foreground; and numerous small infillings to the skin tones and to the dog, lower left. Further restoration cannot be excluded.
