BIOGRAPHY:
Birney Lettick was a consummate craftsman. A native of New Haven, Connecticut, he attended the Yale University Art School and studied with Joseph Albers. He learned anatomy by dissecting cadavers and all the other fundamentals involved in a painter's classic education. His abilities won him the Tiffany Scholarship as one of the ten most promising art students in the country. His art career, delayed by four years in Europe, soon revived. He found advertising clients for national ads and cover work for the Time magazine, Collier's, Reader's Digest, National Lampoon, Newsweek, and National Geographic, as well as movie poster ads for Star Trek, The Champ, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Goodbye Girl, Rooster Cogburn, The Odessa File, The Front Page, Rocky II, Heaven Can Wait, and many others. His paintings were exhibited by the Graham Gallery in New York, and he taught at the New Haven Art Workshop from 1955 to 1970. Just prior to his death, he had lectured to art school students in Japan at the Tokyo Designers Gakium College and related schools in Nagoya, Osaka, and Kyushu, Japan.
