Item Details
Description
An iconic and sought-after pop art screenprint on wallpaper titled "Cow" by Andy Warhol. Hand signed, with an annotation of 81/150, and dated 1973 in ball-point pen on the verso. Copyright Factory Additions, 1971. Reference: Feldman II.12. Andy Warhol's "Cow Wallpaper" was the first in a series of wallpaper designs he created from the 1960s to the 1980s. According to Warhol, the inspiration for the cow image came from art dealer Ivan Karp. The dealer suggested he painted cows because "they're so wonderfully pastoral and such a durable image in the history of the arts." Warhol created huge cow heads -- bright pink on a bright yellow background. Karp said, "They're super-pastoral! They're ridiculous! They're blazingly bright and vulgar!" From a private collection. Dimensions: 46"h x 29.75"w (unframed). In very good vintage condition. Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was an American visual artist, film director, and producer who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s, and span a variety of media, including painting, silkscreening, photography, film, and sculpture. Some of his best-known works include the silkscreen paintings Campbell's Soup Cans (1962) and Marilyn Diptych (1962), the experimental films Empire (1964) and Chelsea Girls (1966), and the multimedia events known as the Exploding Plastic Inevitable (1966-67). Today, Warhol's art can be viewed in countless museums and the value of Andy Warhol's work has been on an endless upward trajectory since his death in 1987. In May 2022, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (1964) sold for $195 million at Christie's, becoming the most expensive American artwork sold at auction.
