Near East/Central Asia, Turkey / Iran Ottoman Empire, Kurdish culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A forged-steel weapon known as a jambiya or khanjar, a type of dagger that is used throughout the Middle East with a high quality silver sheath and appliques. The blade is Damascus wootz steel and features a curved profile and a double-edged design, the tang set in a cow horn handle studded with 96% silver rondels and granulation. The sheath is cast from 86% silver, with lovely braided and repousse motifs that are characteristic of Kurd style. Surface wear to blade and minor nicks. Stable striations on horn handle and pressure fissure. Softening to raised details and abrasions to sheath, otherwise intact.
