Description
GERRIT HONDIUS
Lower East Side Market Scene, New York.

Oil on board, circa 1935-40. 410x540 mm; 16x21 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto.

Provenance: Private collection, New York.

Born in the Netherlands, Hondius (1891-1970) moved to the United States during World War I and studied at the Art Students League under Max Weber and Andrew Dasburg. He was active from the 1920s through the 1960s in a social realist style tinged with Expressionism, and his work reveals the influence of the early 20th century French modernist Georges Rouault.
