Description
Native American, Paleo-Indian Period, ca. 13000 to 8000 BCE (15,000 to 10,000 BP; Archaic to Woodland period, ca. 1000 BCE to 500 CE. A collection of 5 fine chert stone tools / projectile points, including a clovis point with fluting and a massive blade. The Clovis type of point is thought to be the earliest projectile point used by Paleo-Indian people, the fluting / channel near the base aided Clovis people in hafting the point onto a spear shaft, and this seemingly minor innovation probably allowed the Clovis people to be successful hunters. The largest is an impressive corner tang biface blade, asymmetrical with a slightly curved spine and notches to the basal corners create a barbed shoulders and an expanded stem for a wood handle to be hafted with. The unusual shape may have had a symbolic function, perhaps a burial item for the afterlife, rather than utilitarian. Size corner tang blade: 7" L x 2" W (17.8 cm x 5.1 cm); case: 12" L x 8" W (30.5 cm x 20.3 cm)
